Volunteer Opportunity: Youth Program Volunteer
Rainbow Resource Centre's Youth Program is looking for energetic, creative, and committed volunteers to assist with Youth Programming for Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex (2SLGBTQ+) and allied youth ages 10-21. The Youth Program is a welcoming space that offers youth a safer place to learn new skills, create projects and celebrate their identities. We are seeking volunteers who are comfortable having open discussions with 2SLGBTQ+ youth about the experiences, triumphs and challenges that are important to our participants. This may include discussions about racism, colonization, mental health, intersectionality, 2SLGBTQ+ history, relationships, gender identity and sexuality.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead by example and create meaningful connections with participants by engaging them in programming and encouraging their participation.
- Assist with the set-up and clean-up of planned programming activities.
- Assist with the execution/facilitation of planned programming activities, when necessary.
- Establish and maintain safer spaces for all participants by adhering the Centre’s Code of Conduct and maintaining confidentiality.
- Distribute and collect participant registration and sign in forms.
- Distribute bus tokens to participants.
- Provide tours of the programming space to new participants.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Must be aged 18+ (Note: Applicants who are aged 18-22 may only volunteer for the age 10-13 programming)
- Experience working with the 2SLGBTQ+ community is an asset
- Has a basic understanding of heterosexism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and other oppressions and how these impact individuals, families, institutions and communities.
- Is familiar with current issues faced by Winnipeg’s broader 2SLGBTQ+ community.
- Demonstrated ability in effective conflict management and strong communication skills
- Must be able to be on time for activities and programming.
- Able to work in a team setting
- Being bilingual or multilingual is an asset
- Criminal Record & Child Abuse Registry checks are required, and this expense will be covered for successful applicants by Rainbow Resource Centre.
Location and Accessibility: Programming primarily occurs on-site at Rainbow Resource Centre at 545 Broadway. Sometimes programming may also be offered offsite. The front door has a ramp located on Colony St. and powered door. The meeting room at Rainbow Resource Centre has fluorescent lighting and is located on the second floor of the building. There is a small lift (2-person capacity) or stairs that can be used to get to the 2nd floor. Washrooms onsite are gender inclusive.
Time Requirement: A minimum of 2 volunteer shifts per month during one of the following programming times:
- Ages (10-13) 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month 5:30pm - 8:00pm
- Ages (14-17) 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month 5:30pm - 8:30pm
- Ages (18-21) 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month 5:30pm - 8:30pm
- Ages (14-21) 3rd Saturday of each month in the afternoon usually between 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM. This program is usually held off-site.
There is a mandatory training on Monday, October 21 from 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM on Zoom (virtual). Please let us know when you apply if you are unable to attend this training.
