Why volunteer your valuable time at Rainbow Resource Centre?

  • To make connections within the 2SLGBTQ+ community and help foster a greater sense of belonging for youth that utilize the Centre
  • To learn more about the Centre and the resources, support, and education we provide to youth
  • To gain experience in group facilitation and activity management

Title: Youth Program Volunteer (Roles 1-5)

Purpose: To assist with Rainbow Resource Centre's Youth Program drop-in space that offers two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and allied (2SLGBTQ+) youth ages 10-21 a safe, fun place to learn new skills, create projects and celebrate their identities.

Duties & Responsibilities: Lead, host, and participate in group discussions, workshops, and activities; distribute and collect participant registration forms; create meaningful connections with youth participants; provide tours of the space to new participants; assist in program set up and clean up; distribute bus tokens; participate in programming debrief.

Time Requirement: A minimum of 2 volunteer shifts per month in at least 1 of the following roles:

Role 1: Youth Program (ages 10-13) Volunteer

  • Must be 18 years or older for this volunteer role
  • 2nd and 4th Monday of the month from 5:30-8:30pm

Role 2: BIPOC Youth Program (ages 13-21) Volunteer

  • Must identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and/or a person of colour)
  • Must be 23 years or older for this volunteer role
  • 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month (in-person): 6-9pm
  • 2nd Tuesday of the month (virtual): 6-9pm

Role 3: Youth Program (ages 13-21) Volunteer

  • Must be 23 years or older for this volunteer role
  • 1st Wednesday and Thursday of the month from 6-9pm
  • 4th Saturday of the month from 10:30am-3:30pm

Role 4: Youth Program (ages 13-16) Volunteer

  • Must be 18 years or older for this volunteer role
  • 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Wednesdays of the month from 6-9pm

Role 5: Youth Program (ages 17-21) Volunteer

  • Must be 23 years or older for this volunteer role
  • 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Thursdays of the month from 6pm-9pm

Skills and Qualifications: Energetic, creative, committed, positive, have a basic understanding of heterosexism, homophobia, transphobia and other oppressions and how these impact individuals, families, institutions and communities, open to working across social and cultural differences, have an awareness and understanding of how your own life impacts your perceptions of social problems/challenges of individuals and groups, comfortable having open discussions with 2SLGBTQ+ youth about the experiences, triumphs and challenges that are important to our participants. This may include discussions about racism, colonization, mental health, intersectionality, 2SLGBTQ+ history, relationships, gender identity and sexuality.

Criminal Record & Child Abuse Registry checks are required, and this expense will be covered for successful applicants by Rainbow Resource Centre

*At this time, all in-person program participants, volunteers, and staff must show proof of double vaccination. If you require further accommodation, please let us know.

Start & End Date: December 2021 (6-month volunteer commitment with opportunity to renew)

Location and Accessibility: Rainbow Resource Centre (170 Scott St. R3L 0L3). The front door has a ramp and powered door. Programming will be on the main floor (no stairs). Fluorescent lighting is used in the space we have Youth Programming.

  1. Rainbow Resource Centre Volunteer Orientation (6 hours)-Date of this training to be determined
  2. Role-Specific Training (3 hours)-Wednesday, December 15 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
